Investing In The Future
From 2016 through 2019, spending on health, education, skills training, transportation, and public safety infrastructure will total more than $20.6 billion. This includes
- $3.1 billion in transportation investment including rail and road developments.
- $2.9 billion in health care infrastructure to support and improve health care facilities across British Columbia.
- $2.5 billion for post-secondary institutions to further strengthen British Columbia’s world-leading universities, colleges, and technology institutes.
- Examples of British Columbia’s research and innovation investments:
- The British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund has invested almost $415 million to provide capital funding for research infrastructure at public post-secondary institutions, teaching hospitals and affiliated non-profit agencies.
- The Michael Smith Foundation has received $275 million for health research.
- More than $152.5 million has been invested in Genome BC to spearhead world-class DNA research projects in health, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, mining, bio-energy and the environment, including climate change.
- The Leading Edge Endowment Fund has received more than $56 million to establish 20 permanent research chairs.
- $40.5 million has been invested in the Vancouver-based Centre for Digital Media, a Centre of Excellence that trains experts for this growing industry. The digital media and the wireless sector employs more than 16,500 people in British Columbia and has annual revenues of $3 billion.
